You glance at your multivitamin every morning. “Great,” you think. “I’m getting my intake of vitamin E!”
But did you know there might be a little more investigative research to tell if you’re intaking a true supplement or a filler? You might not be taking the best vitamin E supplement you can be.
Vitamin E is the major component in a cell’s antioxidant defense system. Though your body creates natural antioxidants, vitamin E can only be found through diet. Within vitamin E, there are also eight naturally occurring compounds, all meant to fight oxidation, which causes everything from cancer, arthritis, and cataracs. (1)
Being fat-soluble, vitamin E is stored in the tissue, easily accessible by the body for whenever it’s needed.
What Is Vitamin E?
You’ve heard of antioxidants, and you might know that broken down, the word shows you exactly what it does: anti-, against, and oxidant, meaning the oxidative damage that can be brought on by free radicals.
Your body will naturally have some free radicals, but if it has too many, oxidative damage will occur. For everyone, this looks like normal aging, but it could also mean diabetes, Parkinson’s Alzheimers, and more.
Free radicals are present in a growingly toxic environment, like through pesticides, cigarette smoke and radiation, and can also be more present in people who eat sugary and fatty foods and drink excessively. (2)
Vitamin E’s Antioxidative Property
Oxidative stress can damage the body either short-term or long-term. We see oxidative stress after trauma or infections, and although exercise does induce oxidation, it actually helps prevent oxidative stress in the long run.
Vitamin E naturally has 8 different fat-soluble compounds that make it up, the main ones that we’ll discuss being tocopherols and tocotrienols.
What Most People Supplement with: Vitamin E as Tocopherols ❌
Many people assume that anything vitamin that’s most naturally occurring in foods is the most powerful— but this isn’t so with vitamin E. D-alpha-tocopherols are typically synthetically produced, especially in multivitamins, giving you a fraction of the amount of vitamin E needed to benefit from it. Since vitamin E’s fat-soluble nature means that it can easily absorb into your body, it might alarm you to know that D-alpha-tocopherols is not only less absorbent, wiping away one of its most sought-after qualities, but it actually prevents the proper vitamin E, tocotrienols, from entering fatty tissue.
But it’s not totally bad to intake tocopherols. Naturally occurring, it can be found in foods like:
Nut oils
Leafy greens
Wheat germ
Avocado
Peanut butter
Almonds
Pumpkin
What You Should Be Supplementing with: Vitamin E as Tocotrienols ✨
Tocotrienols, though not found in food, are the best vitamin E supplement out there. They seamlessly penetrate into fat tissue like your brain and liver because of their unsaturated side chain and shorter tail and head compared to the counterpart, (3) providing you with all the nutritious benefits that this stellar vit has to offer.
Tocotrienols aren’t commonly found in store-bought vitamins. You’ll have to do some digging, or find your answer right here with our Hi-Potency Multivitamin, which was intentionally made free of tocopherols, and instead with vitamin E as DeltaGold® tocotrienols. It contains 15 milligrams in the multivitamin form, and 30 milligrams in our Ultimate Antioxidant Synergy.
In fact, if you want to overachieve and take it with our new Ultimate Antioxidant Synergy (we don’t blame you), you can even take both in one day, giving you a combined 45 milligrams of vitamin E as tocotrienols.
Especially if you’re looking for detoxification, these antioxidant vitamin E compounds are your friend.
Struggling with inflammation beyond just vitamin E? Here are 8 helpful tips on how to reverse chronic inflammation.
When and How to Supplement with Vitamin E
The When
For continued health, supplementing with vitamin E as tocotrienols helps the brain, skin, heart, and eyes. It’s also a fabulous immunity supporter, and it’s great for exercise recovery.
For prevention, the proper vitamin E supplement prevents arthritis, inflammation and breast cancer. (4).
The How
Eating vitamin E-rich foods is a natural solution to adding vitamin E into your life. Take note from what we mentioned above, in keeping nut oils, leafy greens, and wheat germ in your kitchen.
You should also supplement with vitamin E if you find that the multivitamins you’re using aren’t actually providing you with quality vitamins. Check your bottle now to see if your vitamins have tocopherols or tocotrienols; chances are, they’re probably subbing other vital vits from your diet that aren’t actually being absorbed into your body.
Toxicity & Deficiency
Vitamin E toxicity doesn’t tend to happen until after 1000 milligrams are digested daily, and there’s no data that shows vitamin E can be toxic solely from eating vitamin E-rich foods; supplementing with too much vitamin E is where the toxicity occurs.
Those who suffer from vitamin E deficiencies struggle absorbing fat, including those with Cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s Disease, and cystic fibrosis (5).
Our Multi has your RDA of vit E at 15 mg and Ultimate Antioxidant Synergy has double that at 30 mg. And yes it's safe to get this extra amount...and recommended if dealing if high toxic load!
But please check with your doctor or pharmacist on Rx interactions! “

Our Two Vitamin E Superstars are… (AKA, How to Supplement with the Right Vitamin E)
Choosing the best vitamin E supplement isn’t as simple as picking something off the first shelf in the drug store. While the majority of these vitamins tout health, they’re really made of synthetic ingredients that don’t actually absorb into your body like they could, making them near useless when you’re trying to enhance your health.
Within each vitamin should be an in-depth investigation into what the actual capsules consist of. And more often than not, you’ll find that generic multivitamins try saving money by using fake, filler ingredients that don’t even get close to helping you supplement your intake.
